Business memo

ABSTRACT: I enjoyed writing this piece the most. I got to learn about Google and their code of ethics. In this piece I lacked to provide more evidence however I have revised it. I added more quotes to back up my claim.

MEMORANDUM

DATE : Februraly 19, 2020

TO : Michael Coppola

FROM : Bismah Hasan

SUBJECT : Google’s Code of Ethics on the dog policy

The purpose of this memo is to evaluate Google’s Code of Ethics on “Support each other.” Under this Code of ethics, Google’s dog policy creates a conflict with equal opportunity employment, Harassment, Discrimination, and bullying, and a safe workplace. I will also offer a solution that will allow the workplace to come to a middle ground.

Google’s dog policy states “Google’s affection for our canine friends is an integral facet of our corporate culture. We like cats, but we’re a dog company, so as a general rule we feel cats visiting our offices would be fairly stressed out.” Google allows dogs into the office for many reasons. For instance, google believes dogs play an important role in enhancing the quality of life and boosting office morale. They also state for the health and well being of the cat, owners are discouraged from bringing cats.

This policy is unfair for many reasons. The dog policy does not support equal opportunity employment because it neglects other staff’s wishes to bring other pets to work. Therefore, this policy is biased. If Google allows domestic animals into the office, it should be of all kinds and there should not be any exceptions. The dog policy might cause other staff members to feel excluded. Since Google is a diverse environment, the dog policy might become a sign of discrimination to specific members. The dog policy can make our staff who practices Islam uncomfortable. In Islam, dogs are forbidden. This might cause some members to feel uneasy at our facility. One part of google code of ethics states, “We strictly prohibit unlawful discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, veteran status, national origin, ancestry, pregnancy status, sex, gender identity” This policy goes against this promise that google has stated. The policy may also violate the promise of a safe working place. Many members can be allergic to dogs. Staff members and visitors rely on us to keep a safe environment.

Having pets around is a great addition to our office. Google states “their ability to keep a dog in their workplace may enhance the quality of their work life.” Therefore it is beneficial to a stressful environment however, it should not conflict with other preferences, morals, and health. Many of us prefer dogs to help us calm down and others prefer cats. After evaluating the ethics of the Dog policy I suggest all our staff’s pets be welcomed into the office and that way none of the members feels excluded. I also propose a pet room for our office for safety. If the pets are separated from the main work place it helps for those who feel obligated to not be around animals. Also, the pet room would be allowed for anyone who wants to be around animals. With these solutions, there is a middle ground among every one.

Thank you for your cooperation.
